Art and Human Development (9780415965538)

This interdisciplinary volume explores art, its development, and its role in the construction of knowledge. Presenting theory and research on artistic development as a cultural and creative endeavor, contributors examine the origins of human art during the Paleolithic cultural revolution, as part of a modern cultural transformation, in the growth of a creative artist, and in developing children. Target chapters expressing the disciplinary perspectives of psychology, archaeology, communications, education, and the performing arts are followed by commentaries from internationally acclaimed scholars of human development. Part 1 explores how cultures harness and exploit the arts to give expression to values, social practices, and traditions. This section traces the emergence of new art forms that arose during social unrest, including the symbolization of spiritual beliefs expressed on the walls of Paleolithic caves, and the racial identity and cultural values expressed in the media of the

Remaining an Ethical Leader : A Study on Ethical Christian Leadership (9781979661652)

A Bible study for individuals or groups, "Remaining an Ethical Leader" by HL Clark takes the principles from the paper "The Bathsheba Syndrome: the ethical failure of successful leaders" by Ludwig and Longenecker, and reviews them through the lens of scripture. Written with Christian leaders in mind, this book will help those in positions of power guard against common ethical pitfalls by focusing on the timeless wisdom of God's word, as well as the message of forgiveness found in Christ for those inevitable times of failure. "Control of resources," "inflated belief in personal ability to control outcomes," "loss of strategic focus" and "privileged access" are the four principles which result in risk for ethical failure according to the Bathsheba Syndrome. The ten chapters of "Remaining an Ethical Leader" uncover specific passages of scripture which address those risks, and encourage personal reflection on the ris

Scorpion King : America's Suicidal Embrace of Nuclear Weapons from FDR to Trump (9781949762181)

"We may be likened to two scorpions in a bottle, each capable of killing the other, but only at the risk of his own life." -- ROBERT OPPENHEIMER Scorpion King: America's Suicidal Embrace of Nuclear Weapons from FDR to Trump is a history of America's corrosive affair with nuclear weapons, and the failed efforts to curb this radioactive ardor through arms control. The book's title refers to the allusion by Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the American atomic bomb, to dueling scorpions when discussing the deadly nuclear rivalry between the US and Soviet Union, and signals the dangers inherent in the resumption of the perilous US drive for nuclear supremacy. Providing a vivid and gripping A-Z history of America's deceptive use of arms control as a means of actually furthering its quest for nuclear dominance, Ritter sheds light on a contradictory US agenda little understood by the lay reader, while providing sufficient detail and context to engage the specialist.

The China Threat : Memories, Myths, and Realities in the 1950s (9780231159258)

Nancy Bernkopf Tucker confronts the coldest period of the cold war-the moment in which personality, American political culture, public opinion, and high politics came together to define the Eisenhower Administration's policy toward China. A sophisticated, multidimensional account based on prodigious, cutting edge research, this volume convincingly portrays Eisenhower's private belief that close relations between the United States and the People's Republic of China were inevitable and that careful consideration of the PRC should constitute a critical part of American diplomacy. Tucker provocatively argues that the Eisenhower Administration's hostile rhetoric and tough actions toward China obscure the president's actual views. Behind the scenes, Eisenhower and his Secretary of State, John Foster Dulles, pursued a more nuanced approach, one better suited to China's specific challenges and the stabilization of the global community. Tucker deftly explores the contrad

Memoir of Special Agent Charles Batsell Winstead (9781981180462)

Many people have never heard of Charles Batsell Winstead. Even fewer know that Charles left an unfinished memoir describing his life experiences from his youth until shortly before his death. Fewer still realize that Charles is the F.B.I. agent credited by J. Edgar Hoover with killing John Dillinger in front of the Biograph Theater in Chicago, Illinois the evening of July 22, 1934. Maude Aleene Savage, the second wife of Charles Winstead, inherited the memoir when Charles died and Maude's daughter, Patricia Thorn Jones, inherited the memoir from Maude. Several years ago Patricia, my first cousin once removed, donated the memoir to the Sherman Museum in Sherman, Texas, which is the current owner and custodian of the memoir. I want to thank The Sherman Museum very much for giving me the privilege of editing the unfinished memoir and putting it in a form that everyone interested can read and enjoy. What you are about to read would not be possible without the assistance of The Sherman
