In den letzten Jahren und Jahrzehnten ist die Bedeutung der digitalen Welt immer größer geworden. Kaum ein Mensch kommt noch ohne vernetzte und digitale Inhalte aus, die Veränderung wird zunehmend rasanter, neue Produkte und Möglichkeiten werden immer schneller vorgestellt. Einige Autoren vergleichen die Relevanz dieser Entwicklung sogar mit der Erfindung des Buchdrucks. Während Banken dabei in den 1970er Jahren noch durch hohe Erträge, wachsende Bilanzsummen und verhältnismäßig geringe Eigenkapitalkosten „goldene Zeiten" erfahren haben, sind heute nachhaltige Veränderungen und eine Neuorganisation des Retail Bankings unabdingbar.
